Many of us sometimes see a similar message on our computers regarding virus found which makes us worried. The recent cyber attack has also put a big question mark on security of our computer systems. Although we may be having antivirus software installed on our computers but still there can be situations where either our antivirus is also not capable of handling the virus or the anti virus is not updated due to which the virus might affect our computer system thereby compromising security of our important data.
Solution
There is a solution to make our computer systems and our data more safe and secure. Although we cannot restrict viruses from attacking our systems but by following this method we can minimise/avoid the damage which viruses may cause.
There are two type of user accounts in windows:
- Administrator (With whatever name it may be, just the account type is administrator) - This type of account has all the privileges and can do any type of changes in the windows system.
- Standard (Windows 7 onward) and Limited (Windows XP) - This type of account can do all type of routine works but is not allowed to do system level changes like Install/uninstall a software, do registry edit changes, etc. If you are using Standard/limited type account you will require administrator type accounts’ password when you need to do any system level change.
Check what is your current account type in Windows. If you are working through an Administrator type account then immediately change it to Standard type (Windows 7 onwards) or Limited type (Windows XP). Microsoft also recommends using a Standard/limited account type. If you start using Standard/Limited user type, viruses will not be able to do any major damages to your system as it requires Administrator access to do any system level changes.
Steps to change account type from Administrator to Standard (In windows 7):
- Go to Start-Control Panel-User Accounts and Family Safety-User Accounts-Manage account-Change an account.
- Select the account for which type is to be changed (Other than Administrator as it is a window provided administrator type account).
- Change the account type from administrator to standard. (If you are working on account name Administrator then you can simply create a new user with standard type).
Try this simple change to give you peace of mind about your system security.
